FAQ

What is planning permission and when do I need it?
Planning permission is required when you intent to carry out major building works or change the use of a property in UK. Common examples includes home extensions, loft conversions, basement works, and converting houses into flats.
Do I need planning permission for a loft conversion?
Not all loft conversions require planning permission - some may fall under permitted development rights. However, if your property is in a conservation area or includes major alterations, you will likely need formal approval.
How long does it take to get planning permission?
On average, planning applications take 8 to 10 weeks for a decision, depending on the complexity of the project and the local authority's process.
Can I build an extension without planning permission?
In some cases, you can build a single-storey extension without planning permission if it fails withing permitted development guidelines. However, many properties in London - especially flats or listed buildings - require full planning approval.
Can I convert my house into flats in London?
Yes, but you will need planning permission to convert a house into multiple flats or HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation). Councils have strict policies to manage housing density and protect neighbourhood character.
