4D Planning were instructed to assist the client with opening a Mathnasium franchise on the shopping parade. We advised on the feasibility of converting the retail unit to a tuition/ educational centre (Use Class F1a). We were then instructed to prepare the application for planning permission and the relevant planning support documents and architectural drawings. We liaised with the planning officers at Harrow Council until the decision was made to grant planning permission for the change of use and advertisement consent for the signage.
Mathnasium is rapidly expanding across the UK, with over 20 centres already in operation and many more in the pipeline. The US math tuition franchise has become a trusted resource for parents seeking to enhance their children's education after school, unaffected by seasonal trends or economic shifts. As demand for supplemental education continues to rise, parents are increasingly prioritising this investment over other discretionary expenses.
A key factor in Mathnasium's successful expansion in the UK is its collaboration with 4D Planning, the preferred Planning Consultants for the franchise. 4D Planning has consistently secured approvals for new Mathnasium centres across the country, helping to facilitate the company's growth.
In more established markets like the US and Canada, retailers have recognised the “Mathnasium effect,” with businesses noticing an increase in footfall and pedestrian / consumer traffic whenever a centre opens nearby. Parents, who typically spend over an hour in surrounding shops two to three times a week, contribute to a retail boost.
Mathnasium centres also serve as vibrant community hubs, regularly organising events that engage local families through maths-based puzzles and activities. These outreach efforts ensure that Mathnasium is not only an educational asset but also a valued part of the local community.
