Houses are usually exempt from requiring planning permission for paint and for other minor works to a single dwelling as long as certain conditions are met. These conditions are set out by the General Permitted Development Order, often called "PD". There was a recent case this week of a home owner who was not exempt from planning permission due to the property being situated in a conservation area. The Planning Inspector upheld enforcement action against a North London homeowner who painted her terraced home blue. The Inspector ruled that the paintwork ‘individualised the dwelling’ and harmed the uniform character of the conservation area.
